Understanding Features of Windows Server 2012 VPS

This version of windows has an end of support and updates on 10/10/2023. We will still be enabling RDP for this version as it will have security updates. Please note that when we say Server 2012, we actually mean 2012 R2.
How does this version differ from 2008 R2?
  • Brand new GUI, again. In 2012 we have this blue tile gui and a different server manager.
  • Better CPU threading performance.
  • New encryption protocols supported.
  • Storage spaces now introduced a feature for data deduplication.
  • Windows clustering was introduced in Windows Server 2012.
  • The new Windows Remote Management (WinRM) protocol based on WS-Management.
  • Server Core is still available in this version, although we've seen less adoption.
  • Desired State Config (DSC) was introduced ot keep your servers all homogenous in terms of config.

How We Will Support Your Windows 2012 Virtual Server

We will fully support Server 2012 R2. Although we do not specifically have a support contract with Microsoft, we are still offering best-effort support. Best-effort is what semi-managed means. Since this version is still receiving security updates from Microsoft, we will continue to enable automatic update downloads and installation.

Windows Server 2012 FAQ

Our virtual server platform runs 24/7. Your server will never go into sleep or hibernation. We keep your servers continually running, so your application, bot, or webserver never stops. We have experienced issues of specific applications freezing once RDP is disconnected. For that issue, we recommend using Teamviewer or VNC to run the application if they require user input.

Changing the password to your server can quickly be done by logging in through RDP or VNC. Then press "CTRL+R," which brings up the Run dialog box. You can enter "compmgmt.msc" in this command box and hit enter. From there, you should see a window open up, which has a row called "User management." When you click on the user row, you are presented with a list of users, and you can right-click the admin user there and "change password."

The majority of websites running on the Windows Server operating system use Microsoft's IIS webserver. This web server is used because applications are written in ASP.NET, which is a web server language Microsoft created. Thus, you need to ask yourself one question. Is my site running on ASP.NET? If so, you must use IIS as the webserver. If it's not, you can install a separate web server, continue to use IIS, or run your website on a Linux VPS.

We provide you with two methods of connecting to your virtual server. You can first use the remote desktop protocol (RDP), which comes natively installed on all Windows computers. Just type "RDP" in your search box and run the application, then type the IP address of your VPS. You can use the login details sent to your email or in the client area. Finally, you can use the HTML5 VNC client from the client area to directly connect to the VPS screen. To learn more go here: how to connect to windows with rdp.

We already set up and preconfigure the firewall on your virtual server. You only need to modify it if you run non-windows roles. For example, if you install IIS, the Microsoft web server, the firewall rules are automatically added to get it working. But if you install apache or some other application that requires manual firewall rules. In the case of custom applications that don't come with Windows, you can open a ticket, and we'll configure it for you.
